Tuesday‘s attack on bebeto bus by armed gunmen and the mystery surrounding the incident, should awaken the security agencies to raise the level of patrols along the major highway.

Despite the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) spokesperson, saying that one fatality was recorded during the ambush, the fact that a good number of people remain unaccounted for shows that the attack was lethal and deadly.

The attackers have exposed the recurring weakness of the security forces by attacking the soft spot. The leadership of the security agencies including National Security Services and SSPDF must rethink the situation and not only increase daily patrols, but also design new strategies of securing the lengthy potholed and bushy highway.

As we inch closer to the festive season expect more such attacks by gun men along the Juba-Nimule road.

The latest attack also has ramifications on livelihoods of people, and it adds more pressure on the already struggling economy.

Due to insecurity along the road, traders will be forced to hike prices of goods enroute to Juba and other parts of South Sudan.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon the concerned security agencies to secure the vital road that links South Sudan to the Port of Mombasa.
