The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Atem Marol Biar, recently visited the Juba-Nimule highway to  assess the security situation following last week’s deadly ambush that left one person killed and dozens injured.

Marol emphasized the importance of ensuring safety for travelers while briefing journalists during the inspection of the scene of the deadly attack alongside Lt. Gen. Thoi Chany, the Assistant Chief of Defense Forces for Operations in the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF).

“We must maintain the security of the road so that passengers can reach their final destinations safely,”  said Marol.

The Juba-Nimule highway has become a focal point of concern due to recent incidents that have alarmed both the government and the public.

n light of this, the Assistant Chief of Defense Forces for Operations, Lt. Gen. Thoi Chany, also addressed the situation, urging deployed forces along the border to be vigilant.

“We need you to keep your eyes on the road to stop the criminal activities occurring,” said Chany.

He disclosed that they have deployed forces along the road to protect travellers.

“This time, we cannot afford to lose even a single life,” said Chany.

The ongoing efforts by the police and military reflect a united front against rising crime in the region.

The Inspector General reassured citizens that the government is taking necessary steps to enhance security.

Both Gen. Marol and Lt. Gen. Chany’s statements underline a critical message on the safety of citizens traveling along the key major highway connecting South Sudan to Uganda-Mombasa Port.

The SSPDF spokesperson Maj.Gen Lul Ruai Koang last week confirmed that unknown gunmen ambushed an interstate passenger bus along the Juba-Nimule highway, killin one passenger and injuring several others.

Koang also said that some passengers were missing at the scene of crime, raising fears that they were kidnapped by the attackers who afterwards set the bus on fire.

The bus operated by Babeto Coach Services reportedly left Juba for Kampala early on Tuesday morning, before being attacked  at Lakarakak between Nyerjebe and Kubi.
