The Pigi County Commissioner Suleiman Deng has called on the national transitional government and humanitarian agencies to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the people affected by floods.
“We are appealing to all national and international non-governmental organizations to intervene and alleviate those suffering communities before the situation got worsen, we also call Jonglei state and national government to pay attention to Pigi County,” said Deng in a statement on Sunday.
Deng revealed that more than 5000 people in Pigi County of Jonglei State have been severely affected by floods.
He called for urgent support to evacuate flood-affected residents to safer areas where government and humanitarian agencies can address their challenges.
Deng disclosed that six payams within 26 bomas are already submerged in water following the burst of the banks of the Nile River, River Sobat, and Jonglei Canal.
Pigi County is separated from Malakal town of Upper Nile state by the Sobat River.
The revitalized transitional government in collaboration with UN agencies and other partners has prepared joint flood preparedness and response plan aimed to assist 2.4 million people in flood-affected areas in Jonglei, Lakes, Central Equatoria, Warrap, Unity and Upper Nile state.
