The Minister of Interior, Angelina Teny, said on Tuesday that there is need for the parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement to speed up the full implementation of the security arrangements within the extended transition period.

“With this extended life of our government, we have now to ensure that we complete the implementation of chapter two, that will enable us to make that environment that is needed for free, fair and credible elections,” said Teny during the reception ceremony held in Juba for Akech Tong Aleu, the newly appointed Director General for Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service.

Teny revealed that the main reason for the extension of the transitional period, by an additional two years was to enable the security sector including the national security services to implement pending security tasks ahead of the 2026 elections.

“It is a task for all of us not only as government, but also as citizens to exercise our collective efforts to make sure all resources are properly channeled to alleviate poverty and providing all necessary services,” she added.

In September, 2024, the presidency extended the transitional period by two years in a bid to provide opportunity to implement key outstanding peace tasks such as the security arrangements and the permanent constitution-making process.

The extension followed recommendation from the electoral and security sector institutions.
