About 59,532 people have been confirmed displaced by floods in Pigi County of Jonglei State, according to an assessment carried out by authorities.
“The total approximate households affected by the flooding is 9922 households amounting to 59,532 individuals, most of the crops planted for this season are submerged by flooding which has resulted in livelihoods activities being interrupted,” said a statement issued on Tuesday.
It noted that 20,307 feddans of crop farms have been destroyed by the flooding across six payams of Pigi County, adding that the damage could be huge as the floods persist.
Pigi County has registered 4 deaths related to flooding and also 48 cases of snake bites.
Health facilities across the County have limited capacity in terms of human resources, equipment and medical supplies.
“8480 homes in most of the flood affected areas are damaged and the lack of shelter for the affected population makes them more susceptible to water-borne diseases and other illness. Health facilities within the County have recorded increasing incidents of malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia,” it said.
The floods have affected nearly 900,000 people in Unity, Jonglei, Warrap, Central Equatoria and Upper Nile States.
