Cabinet passes East African Treaty Bill 2024

The Council of ministers on Friday in their regular meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit passed the East African Treaty Bill 2024.

This came after the Council of Ministers listened to three presentation from Ruben Madol Arol , Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

Speaking to Journalists after the meeting, Jacob Maiju Korok, the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, Technology and Postal Services, said that cabinet passed the bill after it was tabled by Madol.

“The purpose of this bill is to domesticate the treaty establishing the East African Community, and its vertical in the national laws of the Republic of South Sudan and to give the treaty the force of law to be an integral part of the laws of South Sudan,” Korok said in Juba.

He said that this treaty will align the South Sudanese laws with the East African Community, adding that it also benefits the country in terms of trade and also ensuring free movement of people across EAC member countries

 Korok also said that the Minister of Justice, Ruben Madol Arol, also submitted the Mining Act, 2012 Amendment Bill 2024, with the purpose of conforming the Act in line with the 2018 revitalized agreement, constitution, and international best practices.

He said that the bill upon its passage into an Act will support the development of mineral resources and establish the South Sudan Geological Survey Agency and the mining corporations and the mining authority.
