Local authorities in Abyei Special Administrative Area are demanding a beef-up of protection from the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei as well as the South Sudan’s People’s Defense Force following the murder of a medic in the area.

On October 9, Dr. John Chier, the clinical officer in charge of Agok hospital was shot dead in Rumamer County of Abyei Administrative Area.

Two women went missing also.

Bulis Bol Koch, Abyei Minister of Information condemned what he called ‘continuous barbaric attack’ on civilians in the strongest teams possible.

“We call upon UNISFA and SSPDF deployed in Agok, Athony, and other parts within the Abyei box to live up to their mandates and render effective security protection to the civilians,” Bol said in a statement yesterday.

He called on the SSPDF to apprehend the culprit whom he believes is hiding inside Athony-Ayouk SSPDF barrack.

According to Bol, the attackers were traced to have gone to Athony- Ayouk, where the SSPDF Abyei – Twic Mission is headquartered.

“We underscore the fact that recurring killing at the same point between wunpeth and wauachin, on Agok road amounts to a clear negligence from the security bodies within the area,” Bol said.

“Therefore, the confirmed culprits are from the Mission. We called upon the commander of the Mission to apprehend these culprits without delay,” he said.

Abyei is an oil-rich area that is jointly administered by South Sudan and Sudan, which have both staked claims to it.
