The Standing Specialized Committee of Finance and Planning in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) in partnership with civil society are set to hold consultative public hearing on the 2024/2025 fiscal year budget.
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) said the public hearing set for October 4, 2024 aims to provide opportunity to civil society to scrutinize the budget.
“So we will be coming together and to scrutinize the budget and to propose our idea, our opinion on various budget items that are allocated in our financial year budget 2024/25,” said Yakani in a statement issued on Wednesday in Juba.
He said the one-day event will enhance inclusion of citizens’ views on the budget, adding that the public hearing is open to members of civil society, youth, women groups, media, academia, think-tanks, and faith-based organizations.
“We thank the leadership of the Finance Committee for availing us that opportunity to take the lead, within our program of transparent governance to make sure that citizens are involved in scrutinizing the budget allocation,” said Yakani.
Yakani noted this year’s budget is an estimation that requires commitment of various revenue authorities to generate revenue including donors, and development partners.
In September, Finance Minister Dr. Marial Dongrin Ater tabled the draft budget estimated at SSP 4.1 trillion before parliament.
The proposed budget aims to consolidate peace, settling arrears, and funding security sector reforms as well as servicing outstanding debt and stabilizing the economy though economic diversification.
