"We Dare where others fear"
The parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement on September 13, this year extended the transitional period which was ending in 2025 to 2027.
They argued that the extension would give them enough time to implement the ever pending peace tasks, such as the unification of forces, enactment of the permanent constitution, organizing elections and also establishing transitional justice and accountability mechanisms.
The transitional period has so far been extended thrice, which is not shocking because the parties have demonstrated lack of political will particularly the SPLM under President Salva Kiir, to ensure the pending tasks are completed on time.
Two years from now appear long but the moment of truth will arrive in December 2026, and one may not be surprised with another disgusting decision taken to ensure elections are not held.
South Sudan urgently needs to hold it’s first election to give hope to citizens and it’s regional and international would be backers.
Some of these partners at the regional and international level, appear disappointed with the direction the youngest nation, has taken following years of painful struggle for independence.
We urge the parties in the transitional government to work to ensure the election timeline is met as rescheduled.
