The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, on Sunday asked the transitional unity government delegation to attend the resumption of the Tumaini peace talks in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Tumaini presents an opportunity for establishing an implementable political framework that will transition our country from violence to peace,” Yakani said, urging the parties to the talks to dialogue in good faith.

He expressed optimism that the Tumaini initiative presents a critical step towards building an inclusive and comprehensive peace in the country.

Yakani also said several concerns discussed during the first round of talks in May have led the parties to sign nine protocols, emphasizing that the talks need to resolve the pending issues.

In December 2023, President Salva Kiir asked Kenyan President William Ruto to pick up the mediation role previously spearheaded by the Catholic Community of Saint’Egidio in Rome, Italy.

President Kiir initiated Tumaini talks to resolve frustrations resulting from the stalled peace progress in Rome, with hope that the talks in Nairobi will provide a sustainable solution.

The Kenya-led Tumaini initiative which commenced on May 9 in Nairobi came to a halt in July when government representatives raised concerns over proposed mechanisms in the negotiations.
