The First Deputy Speaker for the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Oyet Nathaniel Pierino, has submitted the East African Community Treaty Bill 2024 which was presented by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to the committees for scrutiny.
The EAC bill was submitted on Wednesday to the parliamentary committees on Regional Integration and East African Affairs and the Committee for Legislation and Justice.
“I therefore, commit the East African Community Treaty Bill 2024 to the Committees of Regional Integration and East African Affairs Committee, Committee for Legislation and Justice to render joint report to the August House within 14 days,” said Pierino during parliamentary session in Juba.
Ruben Madol Arol, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, while presenting the EAC Treaty bill said that each Partner State shall domesticate the EAC Treaty in line with it’s laws from the date of acceding to the Treaty.
“The purpose of the Bill is to domesticate the Treaty establishing the East African Community and its protocols in the national laws of the Republic of South Sudan, carrying out the obligations of South Sudan arising under the Treaty and to give the Treaty the force of law to be an integral part of the laws of South Sudan,” said Arol.
Arol said the EAC Treaty Bill 2024 was approved by the Council of Ministers in October 2024.
The Transitional National Legislative Assembly shall after 14 days deliberate on the EAC Treaty Bill 2024, to ensure that the bill is part of the laws of South Sudan and in conformity with the acts of the regional trade bloc.
