The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the National Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security held on Thursday training in Torit aimed at equipping the management committees of multi-purpose farmer’s community centers with skills, and knowledge to effectively manage the centers.

The training brought together 20 farmers from various farmers centers aimed at improving their capacities to manage the infrastructures.

James Swokiri, Deputy Head of FAO Torit Field Office, said the training will improve the capacities of the management committees to deliver their mandates.

“We know we need to increase production and productivity of farmers. We also need to strengthen the capacities of all the farmer organizations,” Swokiri said during the opening of the workshop.

For his part, Clement Wani Modi, Representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, urged the participants to use the skills and knowledge for the smooth running of the multi-purpose centers.

“We have committees to be formed and then their role and responsibilities have to be known to each and every one, so that we don’t step into somebody’s responsibility,” Wani said.

He encouraged farmers to boost food production in order to tackle the challenges of food insecurity in the country.

“We want massive production. We want you people to be sustainable. You have to produce for yourself. We are tired of bringing things from Uganda. As a government, you’re not sleeping,” Wani said.

For his part, Adedomina Franco, Director General of the State Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development said the farmers will be able to learn their responsibilities and roles at the end of the one-day training.

“This training is very important because it is going to empower the management committees in each farmers’ center in Magwi and Torit. They will get the knowledge, the skills and they will also learn what are their responsibilities and their roles as the committees,” Franco said.
