The South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC) on Thursday elected Tut Kony Nyang as it’s Secretary General.
Nyang a member of the South Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church beat Romano Oguma of the African Inland Church with 21 votes among the 37 delegates who voted.
“I am happy that all the churches have united to elect me to be the Secretary General of the council, I am humbled with the task. Our mission is to unite the church and the people of South Sudan,” said Nyang after winning the elections held at Aron International Hotel in Juba.
Nyang replaces Father James Oyet of the South Sudan Catholic Church who served for the mandatory term of two years.
“I want to make sure the church committees are activated in the 10 states and three administrative areas, we will work for peace and reconciliation,” he said.
Julia Akeer Duany, a member of the South Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church who chaired the electoral committee, said the election for the Secretary General was peaceful, joyful and transparent.
The position of the chairperson of the South Sudan Council of Churches previously held by Thomas Tut Puot, was handed over to Justin Badi Arama Archbishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan.
Arama said the General Assembly Meeting of the South Sudan Council of Churches held under the theme:”Together,we are better” was attended by all church bodies including the regional inter-church committees and all African Conference of Churches.
“We resolve to speak for peace, adhere to good governance, we urge all member churches to remain faithful, modeling exemplary leadership and service to the people,” Arama said.
The 37 delegates drawn from interregional church committees voted through secret ballot.
