"We Dare where others fear"
The ongoing strike by truck drivers over harassment and extortion by security agents along the busy Juba-Nimule road needs to end once and for all.
This particular issue keeps popping up because the South Sudan government has failed to enforce it’s commitments in agreements/ MoU’s signed with particularly Uganda.
The traders parked their trucks on November 27,2024 claiming they were being charged unfair exorbitant fees at the weigh bridge at Nimule. They also complained that even empty trucks exiting South Sudan are compelled to pay unnecessary fees at the same weigh bridge.
In addition, the traders claim that they have been paying loose change to soldiers manning the 20 check points along the Juba-Nimule highway.
The strike has led to increase in prices of basic goods and commodities amid the dire economic situation; the country has endured since 2022.
The transitional unity government needs to deal away with the road blocks along the road, illegal fees agreed upon in the MoU signed by truckers, Ugandan and South Sudanese authorities.
This would be the starting point to end this impasse that is exacerbating the already dire economic situation in South Sudan.
