The Vice President for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol met with the Governor of Central Equatoria State, Gen. Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani to discuss coordinated efforts to prevent and control the spread of cholera in the State.
The Sunday meeting further looked at the preparedness and measures put in place by the Central Equatorial State government to mitigate spread of cholera.
Akol urged the Juba City Council and Ministry of Health to join efforts to fight the cholera outbreak, while urging citizens to adhere to the health guidelines being provided by health authorities.
This came in the wake of 169 suspected cholera cases and 9 deaths being confirmed in 9 Payams of Juba County on 6th December.
For his part, Dr. James Wani, Director General in the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Health said they will work closely with partners to control the spread of the disease.
Johnson Shuka Nishak, Mayor of Juba City Council stressed the need to create extensive public health awareness onCholera prevention.
“We want to tell our citizens to cooperate and keep their houses clean and restaurants to be kept clean. The Ministry of Health is working together with us in preventing the spread of cholera,” said Shuka.
In October this year, the National Ministry of Health declared a cholera outbreak in Renk, Upper Nile State.
This declaration came following reports of 44 suspected cholera cases and six laboratory-confirmed cases on 23 October 2024 in Renk, Upper Nile State.
As of 27 October 2024, 49 cholera cases have been reported among refugees, returnees, and local communities.
The first suspected case was reported on 28 September 2024 after the County Health Department received a report of a suspected case of cholera at the point of entry in Renk, a border town between Sudan and South Sudan.
