The Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Nicholas Haysom on Tuesday raised the issue of a planned looming attack on Greater Pibor Administrative Area by youth in Jonglei State.

The government needs to act on these reports because ignoring them like last year cost many lives.

The festive season is often taken advantage of by armed youth to take carry out revenge attacks against their perceived rivals. This due to the laxity within the security circles because complacency tends to come in during the festive season.

The government needs to carry out investigations and nip in the bud any planned attack, because were it to succeed it would dent the image of South Sudan as a dangerous country to live in.

This image has cast South Sudan as a bad place for it’s citizens and foreign visitors, due to the magnitude of deaths such attacks cause.

The festive season should be the period for peace and heightened security to allow citizens celebrate with their families and loved ones. It should not be the time for grieving and burying the dead in huge numbers.
