The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Yambio, Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, has strongly denounced a violent attack on the compound of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Parish in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State.

One person was killed and another seriously injured during the incident on December 10, 2024.

“Churches, mosques, hospitals, schools, and embassies are sacred places meant to be sanctuaries of peace and safety. They should protect the innocent, not become targets of violence. This attack is an affront to humanity and a violation of basic human dignity. I unequivocally condemn this brutal act of aggression,” said  Bishop Hiiboro in statement on Sunday.

The attack targeted a camp for displaced persons within the parish compound. Armed assailants indiscriminately opened fire, resulting in the death of Mr. James Undo and seriously injuring a woman.

Bishop Hiiboro called the act “utterly unacceptable” and urged the South Sudanese government to take immediate action to protect vulnerable populations.

“The situation in Tombura County has spiraled out of control. It is the government’s duty to restore order and ensure the safety of its citizens,” he emphasized.

The Bishop also criticized what he perceived as government inaction in the face of prolonged violence in the region.

“Where is the President of South Sudan? Has he heard the cries of the people of Tombura? For three years, this region has endured violence, and yet there seems to be little concern or response from the highest office in the land. Is Tombura not part of South Sudan? Shouldn’t the government protect its own people?”

Earlier that day, Bishop Hiiboro, accompanied by Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako, celebrated Holy Mass at the parish to express solidarity with the displaced community. During the service, Cardinal Wako emphasized the sanctity of human life and urged peace and reconciliation.

Bishop Hiiboro, in his closing remarks, called for unity and collective efforts to restore peace in the troubled region.

“Together, we must advocate for peace and protection for all the vulnerable in our communities. The path of violence only leads to further suffering. Let us choose reconciliation and healing,” he appealed.

Tambura County has been plagued by violence for years, forcing thousands to flee their homes. The attack on the church compound highlights the urgent need for enhanced security and peace-building measures in the region.

As the Advent season approaches, Bishop Hiiboro urged all South Sudanese to embrace its message of hope and peace. He called on citizens of goodwill to join in efforts to foster reconciliation and unity, emphasizing that lasting peace requires action from both the government and the people.

This latest tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing challenges in South Sudan and the critical need for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
