The South Sudan Freight Forwarders Association is set to elect a new executive body for the first time on Monday (today) after their former leader, Deng Deng Geng, was impeached in February this year.
Akuei Abram, the chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, said that six members submitted forms to contest for leadership, with Mayom Jacob and Deng Daniel vying for the presidency.
Abram noted that Mawa Moses, who applied to contest for the executive officer position, was dismissed, leaving Adigo Esbon to compete for the executive officer role uncontested. The position of treasurer is contested by Kuot Hassan and Majok Malou.
Deng David, the Secretary of Information for the Independent Electoral Committee, explained that eligibility for candidacy is outlined in the constitution, which derives its authority from the transitional constitution as amended.
“The eligibility of contestants requires that the contenders be a clearing agent with valid clearing documents or a freight forwarder with valid membership of the association, literate with a bachelor’s degree for the president, and a diploma for the executive officer and secretary general. They must also be a member of the SSFFA with valid membership,” he stated.
Senators will vote in the new leadership of the SSFFA, including representatives from Juba International Airport, Nadapal, Wau, Nimule, Kaya, and Nesitu inland stations, among others working under the SSFFA.
The SSFFA, registered legally in 2018, represents over 200 customs clearance agencies, playing a crucial role in the economy by improving logistics and reducing costs for essential goods.
The SSFFA plays a key role in South Sudan’s economy by facilitating the smooth movement of goods across borders, enhancing the efficiency of freight forwarding, and making commodities available and more affordable for the people.
The contestants will compete for the posts of president, executive officer, and secretary general in an election process chaired by Akuei Abraham, the head of the electoral committee for the South Sudan Freight and Forwarders Association.
