The Ministry of Finance and Planning is expected to start paying one month salary for civil servants on Monday after about 12 months without payment.

This was revealed to journalists on Friday by Michael Makuei Lueth, the Minister of Information, Information Technology and Postal Services after the weekly cabinet meeting in Juba.

“However, he gave (Finance Minister) us the steps or measures that he intends to take during this coming period. As you know very well, this is a difficult period and aside we need to strengthen and improve and apply proper control measures in order to control this unnecessary expenditure. By unnecessary expenditure, I mean going on missions which are not necessary, going on medical referrals abroad which are not necessary, meanwhile our hospitals here are the best now in the region, and so many other expenses which are uncalled for. So we need to improve on this, strengthen them, make proper control, and ensure domestic revenue mobilization,” said Makuei.

Makuei revealed that the Minister of Finance and the South Sudan Revenue Authority have been directed to increase mobilization of non-oil revenues due to the halting of oil production in February, which contributes heavily to the annual budget financing.

“In addition to that, one of the challenges is the force majeure which is in Sudan, of course. We know very well that even if our oil flows today, it will still be met with difficulty because Sudan is at present divided and in an area where it either passes through the rebel area or it passes through the government held area,” he disclosed.
