The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) on Thursday said it has removed soldiers manning illegal checkpoints along major high ways following an earlier presidential order.

SSPDF spokesperson Maj.Gen Lul Ruai Koang, said the presidential order was implemented by joint security forces under the overall command of Lt. Gen Thoi Chany Reat, the Deputy Chief of Defense Forces for Operation.

The development comes in the wake of the recent protest by truck drivers at the Ugandan border of Elegu, who decried the extortion at these check points.

“All illegal roadblocks and checkpoints along Juba-Nimule high way, Juba-Bor road, Juba-Kajokeji road and Juba Maridi road have been removed, to ensure prevention of reestablishment of illegal road blocks and checkpoints, SSPDF is currently deploying standby forces along aforementioned major roads,” said Koang.

Koang also revealed that the SSPDF and other organized forces have started deployment to ensure security during the festive season, adding that these include standby forces to prevent reestablishment of illegal road blocks.

President Salva Kiir last week directed SSPDF to remove illegal checkpoints along major high ways.
