A major milestone for women’s representation was achieved as women elected the new leadership of their union in Western Equatoria State.
Fozia Abass Barnana Bangasu Bakorodi, representing Yambio County, was elected as the Chairlady of the union, and Esther Isaac from Mundri West County was elected as the Deputy Chairlady, while Flora Gume was chosen as the Information Officer.
Other notable leaders include, Secretary General of the union Cicilia Makawa from Tombura County, Grace Elikana, Gender Secretary and Rose Raphael, Finance Secretary.
The election process was closely observed by prominent government officials, including the National Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, Aya Benjamin, alongside Anigude Cicilia Bii, Western Equatoria State’s Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare..
Women from all the 10 counties of Western Equatoria State participated in the election.
The newly elected leadership will now represent Western Equatoria State at the national level during the upcoming South Sudan General Women’s Union elections.
Speaking after the successful formation of the women union, National Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, Aya Benjamin, appreciated women of WES for their collective effort to bring this noble platform for all women who will be doing their activities which will strengthen capacities.
“I’m urging all women who are have already formed in this union to work hard and bring women together in WES, you should work has one family without any discrimination amongst yourself,” she said.
The State Minister of General Education and Instruction, Grace Apollo expressed her gratitude for the new leadership and urged them to work hard for the betterment of the union.
Meanwhile the Chairlady of the WES women union, Foizia Abass said she is going to work hard and bring women together in the republic of South Sudan.
This milestone highlights the critical role of women in leadership and governance, fostering hope for increased participation and empowerment at all levels of government.
