The Central Equatoria State Cholera Outbreak Response High-Level Committee met with the National Minister of Health on Friday in Juba to discuss coordinated efforts to prevent, and control the spread of cholera in the State.
Central Equatoria State has so far recorded a total of 1,833 cases with over 1,342 cases from the protection of civilians sites (POC) including 20 deaths in Juba,
The meeting held at the office of the Minister of Health discussed preparedness, response, and measures in place to mitigate the spread of cholera in the State.
Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, Minister of Health, said the meeting entails the ministry’s intervention to control the cholera outbreak in Central Equatoria State.
“Much of the outbreak is here in Juba, and as most of us know Juba is one of the biggest cities in the country and we have got quite a bit of hotspots,” Deng told the State broadcaster SSBC.
She called for collective efforts from national and subnational entities to curb the spread of the disease.
“And as far as we are here, the Central Equatoria state plus my ministry we are trying so much to contain the cases where they are, but more needs to be done,” she said.
For his part, Paulino Lukudu Obede, Deputy Governor of Central Equatoria State and Chair of the State Cholera Task Force, said the team briefed the minister on the approach they have taken to mitigate and contain the situation of cholera within the State.
“We as the State high-level response and oversight committee from the central Equatoria state government, from the multispectral institutions in the state, decided to come and brief the national government through the Ministry of Health on the efforts and approach that we have taken to mitigate and contain the situation of cholera within the central Equatoria state,” said Lukudu.
Lukudu said Central Equatoria State alone cannot fight cholera calling for coordinated efforts from partners.
“We are trying to work hard with the national government to improve and enhance the coordination efforts because cholera is a multi-sectoral approach, and it was contaminated when the wash cluster did not have been prioritized or enhanced to work effectively,” he said.
