"We Dare where others fear"
The recent perception survey released by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), should encourage parties in the transitional unity government take elections seriously, and also hasten the process of holding them.
The survey revealed that more than 90 percent of South Sudanese respondents interviewed confirmed the importance of elections being held and almost all intended to vote.
This revelation should not blind the government of it’s rating in the public, and any complacency could unravel the nascent peace gains in the country. The decision by the presidency in September 2024, to postpone elections that were due in December this year, angered the majority of South Sudanese who feel their leaders have continued to deny them their fundamental rights to choose their legitimate leaders.
The transitional unity government should take South Sudanese for a ride, and any further postponement of the 2026 elections could spell big trouble for the political leadership.
Elections should be seen as a mere event but rather a fundamental process that could put South Sudan on the path towards sustainable peace, prosperity and development. Elections have the potential to give renewed hope to the masses that have endured frustration, pain and suffering since outbreak of conflict in December 2013.
