The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani has urged the leadership of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a woman in Source Yubu of Tambura County.

On December 26, 2024, an SSPDF soldier was killed by unknown gunman. The soldier’s death enraged his colleagues who stormed Saba miles area in Source Yubu and beat up a woman to death.

“We urge the leadership of SSPDF to hold their soldiers accountable who beat this woman to death. This is something unacceptable and a violation of our bill of rights and right to life,” said Yakani in a statement on Sunday.

He strongly condemned the violence that is taking place in Tambura County of Western Equatoria State.

Yakani said the leadership of Western Equatoria State has deployed unified forces in Tambura County which have calmed down tensions in the area.

Tambura County has witnessed ethnic violence mainly between Balanda and Azande communities since mid-2021.

“I take this opportunity to ask the UN Human Rights Commission in South Sudan to take a proactive role in documenting these incidences, and those who are involved in fueling deadly violence and extrajudicial killing in Tambura,” said Yakani.

“I would like to call upon the political elites and the military leaders who are fueling deadly violence in Tambura to stop. I want to appeal to the leadership of SSPDF that there is no need for us to take extrajudicial action against our civilian population,” he added.
