The South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) has deployed 300 volunteers to help spread awareness messages on cholera across the country.
Achuil Manyuat, the SSRC Emergency Operation Manager, said the trained volunteers have been deployed to cholera hotspots such as Juba, Malakal of Upper Nile State and Bentiu of Unity State to spread targeted cholera prevention and hygiene promotion messages.
“We have trained more than 300 volunteers and deployed them in Renk, Malakal, Juba, and Bentiu in risk communication and community engagement to deliver messaging to prevent and control cholera,” Manyuat said in a statement issued on Monday.
He disclosed that they plan to dispatch response team to Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State.
Manyuat said the volunteers are already raising awareness on the cholera outbreak in schools, with local leaders and in public places and homes.
He said that the SSRC teams are also providing advice to families on how to handle the bodies of the dead with safety and dignity, adding that they have so far reached more than 40,000 people with control and preventive messages in Renk, Malakal, Juba, Bentiu and Aweil.
For his part, Daniel Mutinda, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies DM Delegate, said they have started scaling up their response amidst the rising cases across the country.
“We are deeply concerned by the rapid rise in the number of cases across the country. We are leveraging unparalleled reach, resources, and community trust to mount a strong response,” said Mutinda.
Meanwhile, Celine Leonet, Head of Programs and Prevention at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said they are attentive to detention facilities and hard-to-reach areas and conflict-sensitive locations.
As of 29 December 2024, 13,206 suspected cases have been reported across 29 counties with 199 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.
