South Sudanese are expected to cast their ballots in December 2026, which could signal a fresh start for the country following years of conflict since December 2013.

The political leadership of the various parties within the transitional unity government has a rare opportunity to work collectively, to speed up the remaining critical tasks within the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.

The transition period has so far been extended twice to the chagrin of the citizens, the regional and international community.

The politic leadership has the last chance to make amends by preparing the necessary activities this year, to enable the conduct of elections that will help transition the country towards democratic governance.

Majority South Sudanese support elections, as revealed by the recent perception survey released by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The political leadership should take this in account, because any failure to lay the ground work for the conduct of elections could frustrate the citizenry.

The transitional unity government needs to use this year to restore trust and confidence, that it is capable of delivering services effectively, and this hinges on the full implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
