Thousands of people ushered in the New Year on Wednesday at Rumbek freedom square amid joy and ululation.

Caretaker Minister of Information in the State, William Koji Kirjok, while addressing the mammoth crowd said that the State government is committed to transforming the major town of Rumbek in 2025.

He disclosed that they plan to promote the cultural diversity of the State, and enforce discipline among the various communities.

Lakes State already banned the sale and consumption local alcoholic gin, which it blames for fueling past communal violence.

 Kirjok also noted that with the construction of Juba-Rumbek-Bhar El Ghazal road, business along the highway is booming.

The Mayor of Rumbek Municipality, Akol Manyang Magom, thanked the organize forces for enforcing law and order throughout last year.

Dr. Abraham Malith Makoi, urged parents to mentor their children well, arguing that dress code for both girls and boys was not to the standards expected in Rumbek.

Meanwhile, Pitia Alex Baya, a business man from Kajo keji County of Central Equatoria State who has works in Lakes State, emphasized the importance of the prevailing peace ushered since the appointment of Governor Rin Tueny Mabor in July 2021.

 Baya noted that improved security has brought an end to communal violence, road ambushes which were rampant in the past decade.

Paramount chief of Rumbek North County, Mathiang Ater Chier, praised President Salva Kiir Mayardit for appointing Governor Rin Tueny Mabor whom he said has stabilized security in the State.
