The South Sudan National Police Service said that it has registered 14 minor cases of motor accidents including one death during the last 72 hours of the New Year celebration.
“There really is no safe way to combine alcohol, drugs and driving. I would urge anyone not to get behind the wheel if not intoxicated, to ensure they protect themselves and those around them,” said the police spokesperson Col. John Kassara Koang Nhial while issuing the summary report of incidents that occurred in the last 72 hours.
He noted that the general situation right from 31st December 2024 to 2nd January 2025 was relatively calm and normal countrywide except for some minor incidents.
“The highways and States interconnecting routes were indeed stable particularly during the new year celebration period,” he said.
Nhial said that on 31st December 2024, a male Sergeant from SSPDF was shot dead in his house by unknown gunman in Abyei town and police went to the crime scene for further investigation, adding the suspect is still at large.
“On 31st Dec ember 2024 at around 9:00 A.M, a 45 -year -old male Captain from SSPDF was found dead behind Jebel market. Our forensic team went to the crime scene and referred the dead body to the mortuary to establish the cause of his death and a case was opened in Jebel police division and the investigation is going on,” said Nhial.
He revealed that 4 suspected gangsters who were in possession of pangas (Machetes) and causing chaos in Thongpiny residential area were arrested on 31st December 2024 at around 9:00 A.M. He said the suspects are currently in police detention for further investigations.
On 1st January 2025, at around 12:40 A.M a 42 -year –old male Sergeant from SSNPS shot and injured himself in Shirkat residential area. He was under the influence of alcohol and he’s under medication in the hospital.
“On 1st January 2025 at around 12:40 A.M, a suspected gangster was shot and injured in his leg by unidentified person. The victim was taken to hospital for further medication and at the same day personnel from NSS was assaulted to death by a criminal using a knife at New Site residential area. A case was opened in Munuki police division and the suspect isn’t yet identified and the police are pursuing the criminal,” said Nhial.
He added that on 1st January 2025, at around 1:30 A.M one person was attacked by suspected criminals in possession of machetes.
Nhial said that the joint security operation rescued the victim and the suspected criminals were arrested and are under detention at Sector Four waiting for PPA for further legal procedures.
“On 1st January 2025, at around 6:00 P.M unknown gunman shot and injured a Boda-boda rider on his leg in Suk Hajar. The Boda-boda rider managed to flee and a case was opened in Mauna police division and the suspect isn’t yet identified. And on the same day at around 11:00 P.M, a gangster assaulted a 19 –year- old male using machete in Gumbo Shirkat. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and the accused gangster was apprehended by Sector one forces for further investigations,” he disclosed.
Nhial encouraged the public to assist law enforcement agencies in reporting suspicious and criminal activities to any nearby police station.
