The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani has reminded President Salva Kiir Mayardit to “walk the talk” on prioritizing agriculture in the country.

President Kiir made this pledge of prioritizing agriculture in his New Year message.

Kiir instructed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to assist farmers nationwide in an effort to improve food security.

“President says 2025 will be a year for compromise for peace and agriculture. Your Excellency, this is a great declaration if you can walk the talk,” said Yakani in a statement issued on Friday.

He called for the president’s declaration to be adopted as a working policy.

“We have seen similar declarations like this from you, but unfortunately your support in it failed to walk the talk. We hope that this declaration you can sanction in the Council of Ministers to be adopted as a working policy and this will be translated into an action,” said Yakani.

He urged President Kiir to convene a National Agricultural Conference to discuss challenges facing the sector and explore viable practices.

“We are calling on you with due respect and honor, to commission a National Agricultural Conference at least in the month of February or March before the agricultural season could start. We should bring the actual farmers to define what they see as a requirement for making agriculture succeed in the year 2025. It is essential,” said Yakani.
