Communal violence has claimed lives of 299 people between July and September last year; this demonstrates that the recurring violence remains major security threat to the country.

The latest report released by Human Rights Division of UNMISS, documented 206 incidents affecting 792 civilians, of which 299 were killed, 310 injured, 151 abducted and 32 subjected to conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV).

Many critics have pointed to the delayed deployment of the unified forces, that it has created security vacuum which is being exploited by criminal minded people.

The transitional unity government needs to do more to prevent communal violence, and this should include the speeding up of the deployment of unified forces.

In addition, the concerned authorities should embark on empowering local chiefs to sensitize their communities on the dangers of communal violence.

The government should seek partnership with UNMISS and other relevant organizations to promote peace conferences to encourage communities to coexist in peace.
