A Chinese language and culture center was launched on Thursday at the University of Juba, the leading institution of higher education in South Sudan.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba, Robert Mayom Deng, said the center which contains solar E Classroom will offer Chinese language lessons and also host cultural exchange activities.
“This Solar E Classroom is an integrated housing with 40 seats of desks and chairs, it has an interactive flat panel, solar lighting and air condition and so the students which are going to use it will never find a place which is more comfortable than this one,” Mayom said during the handover ceremony in Juba.
He urged the university students to make great use of the state-of-art facility which is not available in other universities across the country.
In May 2023, the Chinese Embassy offered to construct the China Cultural Center at the University of Juba.
Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, Ma Qiang, said education remains a focal point of exchange and cooperation between the people of the two countries, adding that South Sudan and China, bonded by shared historical experiences and development aspirations, have seen their diplomatic relationship flourish over the past 13 years.
“During this period, education has remained a focal point of exchange and cooperation. China’s commitment is evident through the construction of several primary and secondary schools in South Sudan, the training of over 5,000 professionals across various fields, and the provision of hundreds of scholarships for South Sudanese students to study in China,” Ma said.
He noted the China-Aided Phase II Technical Cooperation Project of Education in South Sudan, launched 3 years ago, has been a significant milestone, contributing millions of textbooks in key subjects including English, Maths, and Science.
“The Chinese Embassy places great importance on strengthening exchanges and cooperation with the University of Juba, including offering opportunities for management training in China to enhance the university’s capability. Since 2021, the Embassy has funded the “Chinese Ambassador Award” 4 times, supporting academically excellent and financially needy students as well as outstanding teachers,” Ma disclosed.
In November 2024, the Chinese Embassy handed over the Award of 18,000 U.S dollars to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba.
Ma said the Chinese Embassy stands ready to leverage the newly established China Culture Center, to introduce Chinese language education at the University.
