CEPO urges Council of States to resolve administrative crises in Jonglei

The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, has urged the Speaker of the Council of States to intervene and resolve the differences between the Governor OF Jonglei State, Mahjoub Biel Turuk and his deputy Atong Kuol Manyang.

The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, has urged the Speaker of the Council of States to intervene and resolve the differences between the Governor OF Jonglei State, Mahjoub Biel Turuk and his deputy Atong Kuol Manyang.

“I would like to ask the leadership of the Council of States to respond to this particular ongoing debate seriously before it escalates to political tensions that may paralyze the function of the state government due to the tension between the Governor and Deputy Governor over the use of the personal income tax (PIT),” said Yakani on Sunday in a statement.

Yakani urged political leaders at the state level to embrace transparency for the sake of making proper use of public revenue.

 “This particular debate will open a window of demanding transparency and accountability, discipline across the 10 states and administrative areas in relation to the collection and utilization of personal income tax,” he said.

On Thursday, Mahjoub Biel Turuk, the Governor of Jonglei State denied having a frosty working relationship with his deputy, Atong Kuol Manyang.

Atong Kuol Manyang, the Deputy Governor of Jonglei State on Friday revealed that Governor Mahjoub Biel Turuk is intimidating political leaders in the Stateby threatening to suspend any of them who are opposed to his working methods.

 
“Our Governor is always intimidating political leaders through suspension, withholding financial support, denying them mobility and accommodation. In regard to the state civil workforce, the Governor deprived their rights by treating them on the assumption of political allegiance,” said Kuol.

The duo have also differed over the total amount of money earned in personal income tax on monthly basis, with the Governor reporting 190,000 U.S dollars and his deputy putting the figure at 336,898 dollars.
