The Mayor of Juba City Johnson Swaka has been asked to find alternative space for female street vendors following recent evictions by the city council authorities.

Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), said the evicted female vendors should be allocated a space to do their businesses.

“They are crying that their source of income has been lost, and we are aware that some of them, their husbands, have not received salary for the period of one year,” Yakani told The Dawn on Saturday.

Juba City Council recently prohibited vending and hawking along the streets of Juba to reduce traffic jams along the roads.

Yakani stressed the need to provide these women with kiosks where they would sell their fruits and other food items in order to earn income to sustain their families.

“The kiosk is like the one of MTN for airtime and when given to these women they can sell their fruits and their vegetables along the streets to earn income for paying school fees, for responding to medical needs, and earning a livelihood through them,” he said.

Yakani appealed to Juba City Council authorities to allow these vulnerable women back on the streets to earn a living.

“I am appealing to your leadership, Lord Mayor and other Mayors of Juba City Council; that the moment has come for you to help these women who sell their items along the streets of Juba, especially those along the Ministries Road and Juba Town,” he said.
