Civilians in Tambura County are accusing soldiers of looting their belongings in Mabia Boma and Mopio Payam.
The soldiers are particularly being accused of looting food, clothing, and other essential items, on December 28, 2024, at the internally displaced persons camp in Mabia Boma and Mopio Payam.
The MP representing Tambura County in the National Legislative Assembly, Jackline Matthew Gaza, alleged the soldiers upon arriving at IDP camps first shot in the air to disperse frightened civilians before making off with their belongings.
“Tragically, after dispersing the IDPs, the men looted their belongings, including food, clothing, and other essential items,” Mathew said in a statement issued on Saturday.
Mathew said the looting has left families destitute, with children suffering the most as they endure cold nights without proper clothing.
“This act of intimidation and theft by individuals who were expected to protect the community is deeply disturbing,” she said.
Mathew condemned this barbaric act, which violates the fundamental duty of security forces to protect civilians.
“I call for an immediate investigation into this incident by the Security Sector. Those found responsible for firing shots to scare civilians and looting their properties must be brought to book without delay,” she said.
She disclosed that displaced persons in Mabia Boma, Tombura County, Western Equatoria State are facing dire conditions.
“The looting of clothing and food has left children exposed to cold and hunger. Their cry for help cannot be ignored,” said Mathew.
She said despite numerous assessments conducted by humanitarian organizations, no tangible assistance has been provided to the IDPs in Mabia.
“I appeal to these organizations to deliver on their promises and provide immediate relief to the affected families.”
“This community has been assessed repeatedly, yet they have not received the aid they were promised. It is time for action, not just words,” said Mathew.
She reaffirmed her commitment to advocate for the rights and welfare of the displaced persons in Tambura County.
“I call on all stakeholders, including the government and humanitarian partners to work together to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure that such incidents do not recur,” said Mathew.
