The Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Awerial, Rev. David Akau Kuol, celebrated the 16th anniversary of his episcopal ordination on Saturday at Mingkaman of Awerial County.

Bishop Akau was first consecrated as suffragan Bishop of Awerial Diocese under the Diocese of Yirol on November 29, 2009, and on January 11, 2015, he was enthroned as Diocesan Bishop of Awerial Diocese.

“I have been a bishop for 16 years now, 6 years as a suffragan Bishop of Awerial and 10 years as a Diocesan Bishop,” Akau told The Dawn in an interview on Monday.

Akau thanked God for his protection as he reflected on his years of service and his call to priesthood.

“I am happy that the Lord has protected me, and I really appreciate those who pray for me and those who support me in the ministry,” he said.

Akau, who also serves as Secretary of the House of Bishops in the Episcopal Church in Eastern Bahr el Ghazal Internal Province, prayed to God to keep giving him the strength to preach the gospel.

He said learning from the teachings of Jesus Christ helped him to acquire responsible leadership.

“We thank God that there are people who actually stood with me through their kind support and through their encouragement,” said Akau.

However, Akau noted that his ministry has been full of success and challenges.

“When I was consecrated as a bishop of Awerial, you know when I came here, our pastors were not trained. So the priority for me was to send some of the pastors to theological training,” he said.

Akau founded St. Paul Girls Primary School in Mingkaman in order to promote education for girls.

“We built St. Paul Girls Primary in Awerial, and that school actually is working very hard. We have so many people who are supporting this school, and now we have added a nursery school. Last year, we graduated 48 pupils from this nursery section,” he said.
