The recent clash between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army –in opposition (SPLA-IO) in Nagero County, Western Equatoria State was unnecessary.

The two forces disagreed over the removal of illegal check point Kubri Bou area, which is manned by SPLA-IO.

The removal of all illegal checkpoints was ordered by President Salva Kiir, who calls the shots in this country and the SPLA/M-IO being part of Kiir’s administration should not appear to be opposed to his directive.

The fighting in Nagero County should be condemned by all right minded South Sudanese, because removing illegal check points is urgent since they have been used for exploitation of civilians.

Soldiers have been surviving on loose change they demand from motorists along several key highways.

The President’s directive is commendable as it is meant to reduce on the cost of doing business, and also ensuring unhindered movement of vital humanitarian assistance across the country.

The SPLA/M-IO risks being viewed as bandits if they don’t change course. Dismantling check points is a necessary move to allow unfettered access of civilians, humanitarian convoys and other necessities.
