The Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, on Wednesday urged the government to prioritize inclusion of persons living with disabilities in it’s ongoing cholera response.

“I would like to take this opportunity to bring to your attention that as the country is preparing to respond to the cholera outbreak, we would like to urge relevant institutions such as the Ministry of Health and other relevant institutions to ensure that all their strategies and their response targets persons with disability,” said Yakani in a statement issued in Juba.

Yakani said that South Sudan is a state party to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, adding that this calls for responsibility toward persons with disability.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability calls for ending discrimination against persons with disability.

South Sudan declared cholera outbreak in October 2024.

As of 7 January 2025, more than 17, 581 cases have been reported nationwide, with a case fatality rate of 1.5 percent.

With support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, over 1.3 million doses of vaccines have been secured to tackle the cholera outbreak in hotspots nationwide. The vaccination campaign in Juba started on 8 January and will run for seven days.
