The South Sudanese government on Wednesday called on Sudanese authorities to investigate the killing of it’s nationals in Wad Medeni and hold perpetrators accountable.
Amb. John Samuel, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, registered the government’s concerns about the alleged killing of South Sudanese nationals in Wad Medani, capital of Al Gezira State.
“We shared this with His Excellency, the Ambassador of our deep and great concern of the government and the people of South Sudan as to what has taken place in Al Gezira recently,” Samuel told journalists after meeting with the Sudanese Ambassador to South Sudan in Juba.
Footage purporting to show soldiers shooting unarmed civilians, including South Sudanese nationals in Wad Medani, made rounds on social media after it was retaken from the paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by the Sudanese army.
In one video, soldiers are seen throwing a young man off a bridge and then shooting at him repeatedly as he falls into the water.
Samuel said they have requested the Sudanese government to allow them send a team of South Sudanese officials to Wad Medani to investigate the incident.
“We requested that we be given consular service so that we can go and visit the people, the area in Al Gezira, and get into contact with the South Sudanese people who are there in Wad Medani, so that we can get the facts, to see exactly what happened to whom and then we can provide them consular service,” he said.
He urged both the Sudanese government and RSF to protect South Sudanese nationals caught up in the violence.
“They should protect any citizen in the areas where they are, not only the Sudanese but other people, and then we have the right to talk about the concern of our citizens,” said Samuel.
He appealed to South Sudanese nationals in Sudan to limit their movement to avoid being caught in crossfire.
Amb. Isam Mohamed Hassan, Sudanese Ambassador to South Sudan, said investigation committees have been formed to investigate such heinous crimes in Wad Medani.
“The investigation committee has been formed to investigate such heinous crimes and to apprehend the perpetrators of such crimes committed against South Sudanese or Sudanese in general,” he said.
Mohamed promised to update the public on the situation in Al Gezira State.
“There are many nationalities engaging in war within Sudan; the investigation committee will work closely with the Undersecretary and Ambassador of South Sudan based in Port Sudan, and we will update South Sudanese and the public on the situation of citizens in Al Gezira,” he said.
Mohamed reaffirmed the government’s commitment to respect international humanitarian laws.
