The South Sudan Civil Society Alliance on Thursday urged the transitional government of national unity to speed up efforts to evacuate the remaining South Sudanese citizens in war-torn Sudan.

This comes after videos showing Sudanese soldiers butchering South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madani, Al Jazirah State went viral on social media.

Dabek Mabior, Deputy Chairperson of the South Sudan Civil Society Alliance, said they are deeply concerned about the killings of South Sudanese in Sudan.

“We call on the government of South Sudan to protect and safeguard the rights and dignity of its citizens, the government also needs to put measures to ensure access and repatriation of South Sudanese citizens to their areas of origin,” said Mabior at a press conference in Juba.

William Sunday Tor, a Juba-based columnist asked the government to come up with a plan to repatriate the remaining South Sudanese from Sudan.

“If the government of South Sudan is serious to save lives of its citizens stranded in Sudan, it must evacuate them immediately without fail and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), must relocate South Sudanese who are not willing to return to South Sudan to other countries,” said Tor.

Ter Manyang Gatwech, Executive Director of the Center for Peace and advocacy (CPA) called international community, the African Union and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to hold both the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accountable for the killing of innocent South Sudanese.

“The government of South Sudan must protect its citizens at all cost. It is the obligation of any functioning government to safeguard its citizens from external threats. The killing of innocent South Sudanese citizens is unacceptable,” said Gatwech.

On Tuesday, a video footage, showing soldiers shooting unarmed civilians, including South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madan, after it fell in the hands of the Sudan Armed Forces made rounds on social media.

In one of the videos, soldiers are seen throwing a young man off a bridge and then shooting at him repeatedly as he falls into water.
