At least 24 people have been detained in connection to looting of Sudanese shops in Juba.

Maj. Gen Lul Ruai Koang, Spokesperson of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) revealed in a statement on Monday, that the suspects were arrested and handed over to police for further investigations and for charges to be framed against them.

He added that the suspects will appear before the Joint Special Military Court at police headquarters.

On Monday, January 20th, 2025, Koang said that the SSPDF recovered several looted items at different residential areas in New Site, Juba County.

On Thursday and Friday, angry youth looted Sudanese shops after graphic videos emerged of South Sudanese being killed in Wad Madani, El Gezira State, Sudan.

Gruesome videos circulating on social media earlier this week of South Sudanese killed in Wad Madani, the capital of Al Jazirah State, raised concern about the safety of thousands who have been stranded in the war-torn neighboring country.

Heavy gunfire erupted Thursday and security forces were deployed in South Sudan’s capital to stop angry youths from looting businesses owned by Sudanese nationals.

Reports indicated that Sudanese-owned businesses in neighborhoods across Juba had been vandalized and looted amid rising tensions.

The unrest follows protests by residents condemning the alleged killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan by the Sudan Armed Forces.
