NGO Launches Project to Combat SGBV in Yambio

Star Trust Organization- a local NGO based in Yambio on Tuesday launched initiative aimed at empowering women in a bid to combat sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) in Yambio.

The year-long project aims to provide socio-economic protection and legal support to prevent and respond to SGBV.

The initiative targeting 440 businesswomen in Yambio and Mundri East County, also seeks to foster women’s social and economic independence while equipping them with resources to combat GBV effectively.

Speaking during the launch, Dominic Christopher Kutiote, the project manager of Star Trust Organization, highlighted the project’s transformative potential.

“This initiative seeks to empower women economically and socially, ensuring they are better protected and supported in addressing gender-based violence. We believe this project will create a lasting impact in Yambio and Mundri East,” said Kutiote during the launching ceremony held at Sunset Hotel in Yambio.

Lucy Elundo, Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), commended Star Trust Organization’s dedication to empowering women in Western Equatoria State.

 “This project is a beacon of hope for women who face challenges in strengthening their businesses and overcoming social barriers,” said Elundo.

She also expressed gratitude to the Western Equatoria State government for enabling partnerships that promote impactful initiatives.

Elia Usini Dominic, the State Minister of Information and the guest of honor, applauded the collaborative efforts of Star Trust Organization, UNDP and other stakeholders.

“This project will significantly enhance the capacity of youth, particularly women, enabling them to thrive in their businesses while addressing GBV challenges,” he said.

The launch of the project underscores the importance of partnerships in addressing critical social issues. By empowering women and tackling GBV, this initiative is poised to bring meaningful and lasting change to the lives of many in Yambio and Mundri East County.
