The Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), Dr. Jemma Nunu Kumba, on Tuesday added her voice to those calling for investigations into the recent killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan.
“We urge the executive to take this issue seriously with the Sudanese authorities, to ensure that there is a proper investigation into this and that such incidents should not repeat themselves in the future,” Nunu said in a statement issued in Juba.
She reiterated parliament’s commitment to support initiatives that aim to resolve issues amicably.
“So, again, as a parliament, we support the initiative the government is taking, and we are also keeping our eyes on the measures that the executive is taking,” said Nunu.
Nunu also commended the police, army and national security services for taking measures to protect Sudanese citizens during riots which broke out on Thursday night.
“Because we are taking care of their citizens, they should also take care of our citizens who are stranded there (Sudan),” she disclosed.
Nunu stressed the need for the two governments to continue to show responsibility to protect the lives and property of the citizens in both countries.
In addition, the Speaker commended President Salva Kiir for imploring South Sudanese to stay calm in the aftermath of the brutal killings in Wad Medani, attributed to the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.
“We are a sovereign nation, and we are members of the international community, and therefore, we should uphold the principles of human rights and uphold international law of human rights to protect the lives of the Sudanese people who are staying in South Sudan,” said Nunu.
Early this week, gruesome videos circulating on social media of South Sudanese killed in Wad Medani, the capital of Al Jazirah State, raised concern about the safety of thousands of South Sudanese who are still stranded in Sudan.
