Establishment of transitional justice and accountability mechanisms has been long overdue

The Council of Ministers on Friday approved the operationalization of the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing (CTRH) Act 2024, and the Compensation and Reparation Authority (CRA) Act 2024.

The Council of Ministers on Friday approved the operationalization of the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing (CTRH) Act 2024, and the Compensation and Reparation Authority (CRA) Act 2024.

This development is critical towards ensuring justice and accountability for war crimes committed since outbreak of conflict in December 2013.

Several families who lost their loved ones during the brutal war are still traumatized and in fear of speaking out. Some of these people know the killers of their relatives, and those who destroyed their homes.

Therefore, the speedy operationalization of the justice and accountability mechanisms will expedite the process of justice, healing and reconciliation. South Sudan cannot skip these processes, because countries in the region which have gone through internal conflicts have used these mechanisms to rebuild their once shattered social fabric.

The transitional government of national unity needs to take seriously the implementation of chapter 5 of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, as it is the only solution to bring unity and togetherness among communities.
