The National Salvation Front (NAS) faction under the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) under Dr. Gasim Barnaba Kissanga, has reiterated it full commitment towards realizing peace in the country.
The group sat on Friday and endorsed Dr Gasim Barnaba Kissanga as their Chairman.
The group distanced themselves from the NAS group led by Gen.Thomas Cirilo Swaka, which they accused of ambushing and killing civilians along highways across the country.
They also said they are not affiliated to the NAS splinter group attending the Tumaini peace talks in in Nairobi, emphasizing they are part of SSOA that signed the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
Kissanga said that he signed the peace 2018 peace agreement with the transitional government in Khartoum, when Thomas Chirilo declined to do and chose to continue with armed struggle.
“We went for peace through negotiation and not through the barracks. This is where I jumped up and I signed. This is why I have been trying to show you that I am for peace and my group here sat today to restructure ourselves and support peace implementation under SSOA, don’t mistake us with other NAS factions, we have been here in Juba under SSOA supporting implementation of the peace agreement,” he told The Dawn in an interview on Friday in Juba.
Kissanga said that they met recently to restructure the party membership and put up leadership structures including ironing out some differences.
“If we cannot iron out our differences within our party, I don’t think we can move ahead. This is one of the issues why we called for this meeting. The other thing is we want to reflect to our people, our members outside, that we are still doing our part. We are doing that now and this is why we have come out, trying to call on everybody,” he said.
Kissanga added that all party members agreed to move ahead in unity.
“What differentiates us from other NAS groups is that we have actually prioritized peace, which we are not going to hesitate supporting. And this is why we are supporting His Excellency President Salva Kiir and Vice President, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, who is representing SSOA in the presidency,” he revealed.
Jane John, a member of the group said that they are supporting peace and have sat as a party to review and restructure, so that people can know them and separate them from other NAS groups who are still in the bush.
She said that sustainable democracy can be achieved through implementing the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, adding that it is what NAS under SSOA is doing.
Ustaz Ruben Kuany, the Acting Secretary General of NAS in Juba said that members of NAS party support Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, as their legitimate representative in SSOA.
He said that Akol is the only person who can raise their issues to the President.
