The country is currently witnessing uneasy calm following the recent violent riots that shook the country.

The violent riots from January 16, made headlines in some international reputed media, demonstrating how events in war-torn Sudan could trigger uproar among it’s immediate neighbors.

The government of South Sudan did a good job to neutralize the violent riots, which had morphed into criminality (looting and vandalizing of property). What is started as targeting of Sudanese nationals for the killing of South Sudanese nationals in Wad Medani, Al Jazirah State, Sudan turned into indiscriminate targeting of light skinned people irrespective of their country of origin?

These events have put to the test the long enduring relation between the two governments and their people.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monday Semaya Kumba met with Issam Mohammed Karrar, the Sudanese Ambassador to South Sudan over the weekend, where the two discussed a range of things including agreeing on the voluntary return of Sudanese nationals who feel unsafe in South Sudan.

In addition, the two gentlemen discussed the speeding up of investigations into the killings in Wad Medani by a fact finding mission set up by Sudan Sovereign Council leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, whose findings South Sudan is eager to see.

The government should strengthen security for all Sudanese and South Sudanese to prevent any more deaths.
