The National Communication Authority’s decision to lift the temporary suspension of Facebook and TikTok, was the right decision to do when the country was gripped with violent riots targeting Sudanese nationals.

The move helped to ease tensions and restore calm across the country, despite criticism.

The fact that several people were killed including Sudanese nationals, justified the shutdown of the popular social media platforms, which were being used to incite violence.

The government should be commended for taking drastic measures in the face of violent riots that caused shutdown of business in Juba, and in other major towns but there are lessons to learn from all this.

For starters, businesses which rely heavily on online technology counted losses which they may not recover soon due to the shutdown of the two social media platforms.

Secondly, it also cut off majority of people from enjoying communication and entertainment on the two platforms which is a universal right.
