At least 20 people have been confirmed dead and one in critical condition following Wednesday’s plane crash at an Airstrip near the Unity State oil fields.
Gatwech Bipal, Unity State Minister of Information and Communication told The Dawn on Wednesday, that 21 people were on board the plane which was heading for Juba.
“Today at 10.30 a.m, a plane crashed at Unity oil field Airport, 21 people were on board including the crew. 20 people are now confirmed dead and one person is injured and in a critical condition,” said Bipal.
He said the plane had arrived early morning at the Airport and it crashed while taking off to the capital.
Several planes have crashed in recent years in South Sudan.
In February 2022, five people got injured when a cargo plane crashed while landing at Agok Airstrip in the Abyei Administrative Area disputed between the border of Sudan and South Sudan.
In 2018, 19 people were killed when a small aircraft carrying passengers from Juba to Yirol crashed.
In March 2020, a cargo plane crashed in the north-eastern Jonglei state, leaving 10 killed.
In addition, five people were killed in November 2021 when a cargo plane crashed in the Maban area of the Upper Nile state.
