The Executive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani has proposed to mediators to incorporate the Tumaini peace agreement once signed into the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

Yakani in a statement on Wednesday emphasized that the incorporation of the new proposals from the Tumaini Initiative will create a new, actionable political framework, which he dubbed the “R-ARCSS Tumaini Agreement for Political Transition.”

“We are happy and impressed since you have shown a willingness to use compromise as a strategy, and that gives us hope that a final agreement will soon be signed, marking the transition of the country from violence to peace,” he said.

Yakani applauded the progress made by the parties involved in peace negotiations, urging them to finalize the agreement that would lead to the country’s peaceful transition.

He urged the negotiating parties to maintain the spirit of collaboration and compromise, stating that the citizens of South Sudan are eagerly awaiting a consensus.

“The country is waiting for a final consensus,” he said. “Continue your deliberations in this positive direction, not just in the coming days but in the weeks ahead, as the citizens of South Sudan are hoping for peace,” said Yakani.

Yakani also made a specific appeal to the negotiations taking place in Nairobi, urging that the discussions focus on linking the Tumaini initiative with the R-ARCSS framework.

He also noted that this framework when realized will create the right conditions for credible and peaceful elections in December 2026.

“The people are calling for a focus on linking Tumaini and R-ARCSS to ensure conditions are in place for credible elections. We ask that the political leaders in these negotiations embrace this call from the citizens,” said Yakani.

The transitional unity government has been engaged in on and off talks with various opposition parties which never signed the 2018 revitalized peace agreement since May 2024 in the Kenyan capital.
