President Salva Kiir has instructed the Minister of Transport, Madut Biar, to investigate the cause of Wednesday’s plane crash in Unity State near the oil fields.

20 people on board including two Chinese nationals and one Indian were among those killed in the crash, leaving one survivor who remains in critical condition.

“In the wake of this tragic incident, I have instructed the Ministry of Transport and all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and swift investigation to determine the cause of the crash and give answers to the grieving families,” said Kiir in a statement issued in Juba.

Kiir disclosed that among the dead were engineers and technicians working with the Greater Pioneer Operating Compnay (GPOC) – a consortium that includes China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the State-owned Nile Petroleum Corporation Limited (NILEPET).

“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I learned of the tragic plane crash that occurred earlier today in Unity State, Bentiu. This heartbreaking incident has claimed the lives of 20 innocent souls, with one survivor. Among the victims were Engineers and Technical staff of the Greater Pioneer Operating Company, one of our major Joint Operating Oil Companies (JOCs) in the oil sector,” he said.

Kiir noted that the tragedy deeply affects not only the families of the deceased but also the entire nation, and the oil industry.

“These individuals were dedicated to the progress of our country, and we all feel their loss. While we pray for the quick recovery of the survivor, I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families, GPOC staff, and all those affected by this devastating event. May you find strength during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you,” he said.
