The National Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management together with the Lakes State government on Thursday established the State Disaster Risk Management Committee, which is charged with mitigating natural disasters.
Speaking during the ceremony held in Rumbek, Dr. Banak Joshua Dei Wal, Director General in the National Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, emphasized that the establishment of the committee comes at a time when the State is struggling to respond to food insecurity caused by heavy floods since the start of 2024.
Wal also emphasized the need for Lakes State government to incorporate disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into sectoral development planning programing and framework in order to develop state level and emergency preparedness and response plans by administrators of State institutions.
United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the African Development Bank are supporting the State to build resilience and climate adaptation strategies.
Betty Scopas, Head of Early Warning System said that the State disaster risk management committee will organize meetings every six months to analyze areas in need of emergency support to save lives and livelihoods.
She also said that the committee will also compile the County risk profiles and develop state level vulnerabilities, multi-hazard mapping and risk assessment, established knowledge and information sharing platforms and institutional bodies to address disaster risk issues.
Lakes State Acting Governor, Stephen Mathiang Deng Monydit, said that the State is struggling to mitigate the damage caused by floods to farms, livestock and infrastructure.
He noted that the most flood -hit Counties include Rumbek East, Cueibet and Rumbek North.
The State Chairperson of the Relief Rehabilitation Commission, Bub Achiek said the flooding have led to some communities into starvation due to the destruction of harvest in the farms.
